Side eYe hosts an evening in Soomaaliya, a cookbook by Ifrah F.Ahmed
Soo Dhawow! Soo Dhawow ! (Welcome! Welcome!)
Side eYe hosts an immersive evening in Soomaaliya, inspired by and in collaboration with New York-based chef, writer and artist Ifrah F. Ahmed’s debut cookbook of the same name. Ahmed is a long-standing contributor to The New York Times, with work also featured in The Cut, Vogue and The Washington Post.
Explore a carefully crafted set-menu of audio recordings, readings by actors, poetry and music, ending with a moderated conversation between Ahmed and culture writer Haaniyah Angus Awale. Find yourself immersed in an evening of transborder tales of labour, migration, loss and family. Savour the joy of meals shared, the grief of traditions robbed, and the longing for the meals yet to come. Storytelling drawing from where they are told through a phone, balanced under a chin and over a stove. Through a soundscape that flattens time, join us as we bridge intergenerational experiences of belonging over a shared pot of shaah.
A signed copy of Soomaaliya will be available to purchase on the night.
Thank you to Sabiib, Culture House and The Anti-Tribalism Movement for their support in making this special evening possible. This is a not-for-profit event; all proceeds will go to the costs of running the event.
Reviews
For Ahmed, Soomaaliya has always been more than a cookbook. It is a work of cultural preservation, an invitation, and a way of addressing the disruption… of forced migration
